Debt Recovery (for business customers, in claims up to £100k)

In general, legal fees are charged on an hourly basis at the rates set out below and which appear in our Litigation Department’s terms and conditions. The rates are updated in February each year.

Legal fees for acting on your behalf: £1,000.00 – £3,000.00 + vat

These rates may be revised in urgent or unusually complex matters. An uplift for weekend, Bank

Holiday and late night working may apply. You will receive notification of all such changes prior

to any work being commenced. If the firm has to incur additional wages and expenses for our

support staff having to work overtime in order to service such work then we reserve the right to

include such wages and expenses as a separate item on any invoice delivered to you.


The firm may call upon other partners, solicitors, trainees and clerks to assist the Legal

Representative in the conduct of your matter.


Generally we would expect a simple debt recovery / money claim to take around 6 months to conclude, depending on the court and the other parties. If the debtor doesn’t respond or file a defence, the case could conclude within a matter of weeks. In some cases, the court process can take several years.



 Disbursements are costs related to your matter that are payable to third parties, such as Court, Counsel and/or search agent fees. We handle the payment of the disbursements on your behalf to ensure a smoother process.

Counsel’s Fee

These would be chargeable in complex cases or where an expert opinion is required. These costs can range depending on the type of service required (advice, opinion, attendance at court etc.) and level of experience. Barristers charge at hourly rates between £150.00 + VAT to £500.00 + VAT. In certain circumstances fixed fees can be negotiated.


Investigator / Search Agent

It may be necessary to instruct an investigator or search agent to locate a debtor. Costs can vary depending on the level of search required, i.e. simple computer search, doorstep search, surveillance, location etc. Basic costs for a simple computer search can range from £150.00 + VAT to £500.00 + VAT.


Other Disbursements

If any other disbursements are required they will be advised before they are incurred.


Enforcement of Orders

Enforcing any order made by the court would be charged at our usual hourly rates. These costs can vary substantially depending on the method of enforcement chosen. In addition, there may be court fees and disbursements to pay. We can advise of the costs and estimates upon inquiry.
